The Genocidal Mindset. Socio-religious Approaches to Colonialism, Shoah, and Nakba

Colloque organisé par Ron Naiweld (CNRS-EHESS, CRH-EJ) et Ophira Gamliel (Université de Glasgow).

Religious studies and related fields like Theology, Jewish Studies, and Islamic and Arabic Studies seem to operate still within a framework that separates the two domains of the « historical » and the « spiritual », thus avoiding an analysis of theological discourses as powerful generators of social, economic and political realities. This common approach seems even more problematic today, as we witness the escalation of violence in Israel/Palestine since October 7, bolstered not only by national but also by religious discourse obfuscating dire material realities by resorting to apocalyptic and eschatological tropes, while antinomianism becomes the hallmark of political elites.

As scholars studying different aspects of religious discourse, we seek to engage historians, anthropologists, and sociologists of religion, as well as other specialists of religious texts and societies in bridging the disciplinary gaps between the theological and the political. Our aim is to go beyond the theoretical to advance positive impact, aiming to put off the fire, dispel the smoke, and uncover religious heuristics to mitigate the unfolding war-induced disaster.

Les études religieuses et les domaines connexes tels que la théologie, les études juives et les études islamiques et arabes semblent toujours fonctionner dans un cadre qui sépare les deux domaines de l’« historique » et du « spirituel », évitant ainsi une analyse des discours théologiques en tant que puissants générateurs de réalités sociales, économiques et politiques. Cette approche commune semble encore plus problématique aujourd’hui, alors que nous assistons à l’escalade de la violence en Israël/Palestine depuis le 7 octobre, soutenue non seulement par un discours national mais aussi par un discours religieux qui obscurcit les réalités matérielles désastreuses en recourant à des tropes apocalyptiques et eschatologiques, tandis que l’antinomianisme devient la marque de fabrique des élites politiques.

En tant que chercheurs étudiant différents aspects du discours religieux, nous cherchons à impliquer les historiens, les anthropologues et les sociologues de la religion, ainsi que d’autres spécialistes des textes et des sociétés religieuses, en comblant les fossés disciplinaires entre le théologique et le politique. L’objectif de ce colloque organisé par Ron Naiweld (EJ) et Ophira Gamliel (University of Glasgow), est d’aller au-delà de la théorie et d’avoir un impact positif, afin d’éteindre l’incendie, de dissiper la fumée et de découvrir les heuristiques religieuses pour atténuer le désastre causé par la guerre qui se déroule actuellement.
